Orcs and Goblins are overwhelmingly violent, yet possess real character and personality. Orcs are built for war and resolve even minor disagreements with full-blooded combat. Goblins, on the other hand, prefer to wait until opponents are badly outnumbered, wounded or looking the other way (and preferably all three). In battle, Goblins form huge mobs that are not easily ignored. An Orcs & Goblins army is an unruly mix, formed out of a staggering variety of greenskins and monsters. From the elite, soldierly Black Orcs to towering Giants; from diminutive Snotlings to monstrous spiders the size of houses, the variety of tactics available to the Orcs & Goblins player is matched only by the sheer variety of troops at his disposal. Regardless of how it is formed, an Orcs & Goblins army is unpredictable on the battlefield. It is capable of smashing aside all opposition in a storm of violence.

To determine what happens in each Close Combat phase, pick a unit in base contact with the Troll Hag and roll a D6 on one of the following tables. Troll Hag Special Attacks

Unless stated otherwise, a model does not have a special rule. Most special rules are given to a model by the relevant entry in its Warhammer Armies book. In addition, a model's attacks can gain special rules because of the equipment it is using. Similarly, a model might get special rules as the result of a spell that has been cast upon it or perhaps even as the result of it being in a particular type of terrain. Where this is the case, the rule that governs the equipment, spell or terrain feature in question will make this clear. Unless otherwise noted, the effects of different special rules are cumulative. However, unless otherwise stated, a model gains no additional benefit from having the same special rule multiple times. Certain special rules partly consist of other special rules, all mentioned in the following pages. Some special rules have an effect at the beginning of the battle, or before the game starts. These effects take place after both armies are deployed and any Deployment special rules have occurred but before the roll for first turn. Some special rules, especially in the Army Books, will affect models of a certain type. Note that special rules and spells such as this only ever affect friendly units from their own army, and will not affect enemy or allied units that happen to be in range. Eventually you are likely to come upon situations where two opposing special rules are in play. In these cases, the two special rules will simply cancel each other out either partially or completely, and neither will have an effect. Most of the more commonly used special rules in Warhammer are listed here, but many troop types have their own unique abilities laid out in their Warhammer Armies book.

Special Rules

From out of the dark and twisted forests of the Old World come the Cloven Ones, uncounted hordes of braying creatures of horn, hoof, muscle and hate. The Beastmen are the true Children of Chaos. Grotesque hybrids of fierce animal and primitive human, these horned and stinking warrior-beasts infest the blighted forests that cover the Old World. Their savage tribes explode from the depths of the haunted woods to wage bitter war against the civilised races. So profound is the Beastmen's hatred of order and reason that they seek to drag the world kicking and screaming into a barbaric and primal age. A fully arrayed Beastman army is a splendid spectacle. It is quite intimidating for any opponent to face across the tabletop, for not only is it numerous but it includes lots of terrifying monsters from the deep woods. Beastmen units can also attack from ambush, surrounding the enemy army and herding it towards the storm of jagged blades, sharpened horns and gouging tusks that forms the main Beastman battleline.

From the frozen reaches of the north come the Warriors of Chaos, an army of battle-hardened killers with hearts of iron and souls as black as coal. Hell-bent on slaughter and destruction, they fight for glory and the favour of their Dark Gods. Armed and armoured with hell-forged steel, these servants of the Ruinous Powers possess inhuman strength granted to them by their unholy patrons. Feared above all other foes, they are men of steel and fire, unrelenting in their dark and glorious quest to conquer the world in the name of their blasphemous gods. They are led to war by Champions of Chaos; unholy men who have willingly sold their humanity to the Ruinous Powers. These chosen warriors draw the gaze of the Chaos Gods as they slaughter in their name, and with great victories come mighty rewards, potent mutations and even immortality. Be warned, for though the path of Chaos can lead to a destiny greater than mortal minds can comprehend, it can also quickly result in insanity and death. After all, the capricious Gods of Chaos are nothing if not fickle, and the only certainty for those who swear allegiance to them is eventual damnation: Many are condemned to a gruesome end, twisting and deforming into a mindless Chaos Spawn. When a Chaos incursion comes pouring out of the northern wastes, the world trembles. Champions of the Dark Gods lead their warriors against the realms of men. Barbaric Marauder tribes stride through the snows with the names of their terrible gods on their lips. Alongside them march regiments of armour-clad Chaos Warriors, flanked by baroque-armoured Knights and a host of foul, Chaos-tainted monsters. Mighty Sorcerers weave terrifying spells of destruction. In the wake of these brutal armies comes the Realm of Chaos itself; bleeding ever outward until it threatens to engulf the lands of the sane in anarchy and misrule. The servants of the Dark Gods of Chaos never tire in their dark quest to drown the world in a tide of blood, and with every victory, the end of the world comes a little closer.
