From their fortress strongholds in and below the snow-capped mountains, the Dwarfs look out upon a world they once ruled. Many millennia of war and invasion have embittered the Dwarfs, forging them into a race of hardened warriors. Now they seek to reclaim what was once their own. They miss no opportunity to record a grudge and will go to any lengths to settle old scores with the edge of an axe. A Dwarf army is a formidable sight, with ranks of bearded and heavily armoured warriors, their shields and banners identifying clans, guilds and gods. The doughty steel-clad infantry are supported by powerful engines of war, machinery of destruction that no foe can match. While Dwarfs are unwilling to cast magic, they have learned to inscribe runes that can bind eldritch forces, allowing them to create weapons and armour of legend. In the first turn of combat in which their unit is charged, all models with this special rule receive a +1 bonus to any Parry save they are eligible to take.

Shieldwall (Dwarfs)

Unless stated otherwise, a model does not have a special rule. Most special rules are given to a model by the relevant entry in its Warhammer Armies book. In addition, a model's attacks can gain special rules because of the equipment it is using. Similarly, a model might get special rules as the result of a spell that has been cast upon it or perhaps even as the result of it being in a particular type of terrain. Where this is the case, the rule that governs the equipment, spell or terrain feature in question will make this clear. Unless otherwise noted, the effects of different special rules are cumulative. However, unless otherwise stated, a model gains no additional benefit from having the same special rule multiple times. Certain special rules partly consist of other special rules, all mentioned in the following pages. Some special rules have an effect at the beginning of the battle, or before the game starts. These effects take place after both armies are deployed and any Deployment special rules have occurred but before the roll for first turn. Some special rules, especially in the Army Books, will affect models of a certain type. Note that special rules and spells such as this only ever affect friendly units from their own army, and will not affect enemy or allied units that happen to be in range. Eventually you are likely to come upon situations where two opposing special rules are in play. In these cases, the two special rules will simply cancel each other out either partially or completely, and neither will have an effect. Most of the more commonly used special rules in Warhammer are listed here, but many troop types have their own unique abilities laid out in their Warhammer Armies book.

Special Rules

Famous mercenary regiments acquire a certain notoriety because they are remarkably successful, brutal, adventurous, or for some other reason that brings them to the attention of the world. We call them Regiments of Renown and these units can often be found fighting for many different armies, as long as the pay is good! Individual Regiments of Renown are led by famous characters, and indeed are frequently named after these leaders. For example, the notorious Ogre Captain Golgfag, whose Ogre mercenaries have, at one time or another, looted and despoiled most civilised parts Old World... and some not so civilised ones too. Regiments of Renown do not necessarily have ties to a particular country, nor are they a whole new race. They are bands of warriors and adventurers who live by fighting – for glory and more importantly for gold! The Regiments of Renown are made up of skilled pikemen, deadly marksmen, Hobgoblin cavalry from the eastern steppes, Halfling scouts, drunken Dwarf pirates, Ogres from the Badlands and Giants from the misty shores of Albion. Together they ply their trade to every point of the compass in the Old and New Worlds, fighting for anybody, any time, any place, anywhere… Although the Regiments of Renown have no common heritage, many find employment in that most notorious of mercenary breeding grounds, the land of Tilea. Tilea is an anarchic land and is in an almost constant state of upheaval, as the wealthy merchant princes of the independent city states plot against each other. All this anarchy means mercenaries who travel there can be assured of profitable employment. Just as there are regiments of mercenaries to hire, there are just as many lone freelancers. These individuals wander the Old World, selling their skills to the highest bidder. Many are thieves and brigands, and some are hard bitten mercenaries who will not (or cannot) join one of the many mercenary regiments. There are thrill-seeking Imperial nobles, fanatical Witch Hunters and even specialists such as siege engineers, wizards or assassins.
