Wherever there is gold to be won you will find them. Whenever there is a fight in the offing they will be lurking around the next corner. These are dangerous men, all too willing to lend the weight of their blade to whoever will offer the heaviest purse. The Dogs of War are warlords and bandits, sell-swords and freebooters, and brave adventurers who willingly risk all upon the battlefield for the chance to win measureless riches. They are possibly the most egalitarian force in the whole of the Warhammer world. These sell-sword armies are formed from a wide variety of races who have set aside their petty differences and banded together under one banner. Man fights alongside Dwarf and Elf and Ogre, all in the name of the purest cause of all: unadulterated greed!

From the ten kingdoms of Ulthuan, the High Elves march to war. They have stood guard over this world for millennia, defending it from the predations of Daemons, the worshippers of unholy gods and the unthinking meddling of lesser races. The High Elves are the most skilled warriors in the known world. Every Elf in the force is blessed with dexterity and agility enough to strike a charging knight from his saddle before his lance can hit home. The mainstay of the High Elf army are the citizen warriors who form the Archer and Spear regiments, in turn these are bolstered by elite fighters such as the legendary Sword Masters and the proud Dragon Princes of Caledor.  There are few sights more glorious than an army of High Elves. Serried ranks of white-garbed soldiers take to the field alongside proud knights, mighty mages and ancient creatures of legend. The High Elves are an elite force who, warrior-for-warrior, can overmatch almost any other race in the Warhammer world. Over the long millennia of their existence, they have mastered every style of fighting – whether you seek phalanxes of spears, unstoppable cavalrymen, dead-eyed archers or peerless charioteers, you will find them here.

Famous mercenary regiments acquire a certain notoriety because they are remarkably successful, brutal, adventurous, or for some other reason that brings them to the attention of the world. We call them Regiments of Renown and these units can often be found fighting for many different armies, as long as the pay is good! Individual Regiments of Renown are led by famous characters, and indeed are frequently named after these leaders. For example, the notorious Ogre Captain Golgfag, whose Ogre mercenaries have, at one time or another, looted and despoiled most civilised parts Old World... and some not so civilised ones too. Regiments of Renown do not necessarily have ties to a particular country, nor are they a whole new race. They are bands of warriors and adventurers who live by fighting – for glory and more importantly for gold! The Regiments of Renown are made up of skilled pikemen, deadly marksmen, Hobgoblin cavalry from the eastern steppes, Halfling scouts, drunken Dwarf pirates, Ogres from the Badlands and Giants from the misty shores of Albion. Together they ply their trade to every point of the compass in the Old and New Worlds, fighting for anybody, any time, any place, anywhere… Although the Regiments of Renown have no common heritage, many find employment in that most notorious of mercenary breeding grounds, the land of Tilea. Tilea is an anarchic land and is in an almost constant state of upheaval, as the wealthy merchant princes of the independent city states plot against each other. All this anarchy means mercenaries who travel there can be assured of profitable employment. Just as there are regiments of mercenaries to hire, there are just as many lone freelancers. These individuals wander the Old World, selling their skills to the highest bidder. Many are thieves and brigands, and some are hard bitten mercenaries who will not (or cannot) join one of the many mercenary regiments. There are thrill-seeking Imperial nobles, fanatical Witch Hunters and even specialists such as siege engineers, wizards or assassins.

From the chill land of Naggaroth, the black-hearted Dark Elf legions come. Seeing the world as both prey and prize, they take what they want from whomsoever they please, leaving nothing but ravaged bodies and ruined cities in their wake. Betrayed long ago by their High Elf kin, theirs is an existence dedicated to revenge. Immerse yourself in the cruel delights of Naggaroth, bend your knee to the Witch King, and prepare to do battle for glory and plunder. The Dark Elves are an intimidating army, filled with the promise of slaughter. Bleak-eyed warriors march to battle alongside cruel knights, merciless sorcerers and savage monsters of the chill wilds. Dark Elf soldiers stand amongst the elite of the Warhammer world, superior to most warriors, and overmatched by none. They are ruthless killers, masters of all the many ways of death. Whether you want to fight your battles with steel, poison, sorcery or sheer fighting ferocity, you will find the Dark Elf army a perfect weapon with which slaughter your foes. The Dark Elves were cast from their homeland of Ulthuan following a bitter civil war. They are now merciless raiders, dedicating their lives to the infliction of pain and misery on others. The Druchii, as they call themselves, are united in their hatred of all other living things, ruled over by Malekith – the dread Witch King of Naggaroth. Their army contains many highly-skilled warriors such as Black Ark Corsairs, Witch Elves of Khaine, Cold One Knights and fearsome Black Guard, as well as monstrous creatures including wild Manticores and many-headed War Hydras.

Dark Elves

Models with this special rule have the Dodge (6+) special rule in close combat. However, this cannot be used against enemies that attack before the model with Elven Grace.

Elven Grace

Unless stated otherwise, a model does not have a special rule. Most special rules are given to a model by the relevant entry in its Warhammer Armies book. In addition, a model's attacks can gain special rules because of the equipment it is using. Similarly, a model might get special rules as the result of a spell that has been cast upon it or perhaps even as the result of it being in a particular type of terrain. Where this is the case, the rule that governs the equipment, spell or terrain feature in question will make this clear. Most of the more commonly used special rules in Warhammer are listed here, but many troop types have their own unique abilities laid out in their Warhammer Armies book. Certain special rules partly consist of other special rules, all mentioned in the following pages. Unless otherwise noted, the effects of different special rules are cumulative. However, unless otherwise stated, a model gains no additional benefit from having the same special rule multiple times. This also applies to unique special rules in the various Warhammer Armies books that might contain special rules that are normally cumulative. Some special rules have an effect at the beginning of the battle, or before the game starts. These effects take place after both armies are deployed and any Deployment special rules have occurred but before the roll for first turn. Some special rules, especially in the Army Books, will affect models of a certain type. Note that special rules and spells such as this only ever affect friendly units from their own army, and will not affect enemy or allied units that happen to be in range. Eventually you are likely to come upon situations where two opposing special rules are in play. In these cases, the two special rules will simply cancel each other out either partially or completely, and neither will have an effect.
