During one of Kenshin's first duels, he failed to completely deflect his opponents greatsword. It ran along one of Kenshin’s blades and almost cut open his head. However, it only nicked the headband he was wearing, which proceeded to gently flow to the ground. From that day on, Kenshin has always kept the mended band, to remind him to never let his guard slip.
